Do you mean setting it as a default application for mailto links eg in
your browser?

This is part of the MIME specification[0] and should be an option for an
installer script/package, otherwise users can do it on their own.
Shipping a .desktop file in the repo would make this easier.

The MIME type for mailto links should be `x-scheme-handler/mailto`
though I haven't found it in any specification yet.

No I meant the ability to "click" (select) a mailto link within an email which would open a pre-populated composition window.

This would be generally beneficial, but I'm thinking about making email more interactive with my mail server, for creating dialogues etc.

This makes sense alright. The parts are already there, there's a
function that creates drafts from mailto links and you can already open
urls from e-mail bodies, so only a small amount of work needs to be
done.
